Hoosier Village

My internship site is at Hoosier Village in Zionsville. During my time there I completed resident assessments, came up with games to play, crafts to make, things to bake, planning outings for the residents, attending morning meetings,  interacted with their family members, and collaborate with aides and certified nursing assistants when needed.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn how to work with residents families in certain situations.

    • I believe I met this by sitting in on different meetings with residents families and coming up with different solutions to problems that came up. â€‹

  • Learn more about different areas in long term care by shadowing a different area one day.

    • I believe I have met this objective by being able to shadow the Social Services/Medical Records role for two different days.

  • Build my professional network.

    • I was able to connect with people on Linked In and form relationships with co-workers not only at Hoosier Village but with other people who work within the BHI Community.

Personal Development

During my time as the Life Enrichment Intern I developed better communication, creativity, scheduling skills and transportation skills from assisting residents to and from places. I also was able to improve my interpersonal skills from spending time with residents as well as communicating with staff members from different departments.I was able to help impact the resident's lives by being personable and helping them with what I could. I also assisted my supervisor with any tasks that she needed completed, and lastly always being on-time and attentive during my shifts.

Academic Connections

I believe my Profession in the Healthcare Workplace (H245) class prepared me for this internship because I learned what business casual clothing looked like, how to be professional in meetings, and how to introduce myself to someone. This class better prepared me for how to act professionally at my internship.

Another class that prepared me was Leadership in Health Management: Dispute Resolutions and Difficult Conversations (H361) because I got to sit in on difficult conversations with team members, help resolve conflict, and learn how to negotiate during different situations.
